Learning and playing together
Embu County Primary School, Kenya
The 2012 World Busk brought Musequality into contact with several organisations who share our goals. One of them is the
charity Moving Mountains, which funds a school in the slum district of the Embu, eastern Kenya.
The school was keen to introduce music into the school curriculum and had managed to obtain support for a qualified music teacher, but had no instruments. Musequality provided them with recorders and a keyboard, along with an amplifier so that it can be used during open-air assemblies.
Music at the school has since flourished. Having won the trophy for best school at the District level, Embu County Primary School went on to compete in the national finals of the 2013 Embu Schools Music Festival, and came home with a bronze medal for the recorder set piece.
Having the opportunity to participate with the support of Musequality has given the children a fantastic exposure to different musical styles, provided a focus and motivation to practice, and improved their abilities and confidence. Congratulations to the Embu team from all of us! Thanks to our donors, we were able to cover the costs of entry, transport and accommodation for the children and their teachers at the county, district and national levels of this high-profile competition.
